Change One Thing at a Time

Almost every driver who is stuck has the same problem: they are changing several things every lap, so they can never tell what worked.

The method

  1. Pick one thing. One corner, one specific change. "Brake at the second sign instead of the first."
  2. Drive several laps with it. Not one. Three or four, so a single scrappy lap does not decide the answer.
  3. Compare to your recent laps. Better, worse, or no difference?
  4. Keep it or discard it. Then pick the next thing.

That is the whole method. It is boring and it works.

Why one thing

If you change your braking point, your turn-in point and your throttle timing on the same lap and go faster, you know something helped. You do not know which one, and you do not know whether one of them actually hurt and the others made up for it.

Next session you will not be able to reproduce it, because you do not know what "it" was.

Why several laps

Lap times move around for reasons that have nothing to do with you — traffic, kart variation, changing track grip. One lap is not evidence. A group of laps that are consistently quicker is.

"No difference" is a real result

If a change makes no difference, that is useful. It tells you that corner is not where your time is, and you can stop spending attention on it. Move on to the next idea instead of trying the same one harder.

Write it down

Two lines at the end of a session — what you tried and what happened — turns a session into knowledge. Without it you will try the same experiment again in three months and not remember how it went.

The thing this protects you from

Driving harder. When a session is not going well the instinct is to push more, everywhere. That usually makes you less consistent and less able to read what is happening. A single deliberate change beats general effort almost every time.

Put this into practice

Record a session in SplitOne and see whether it actually changed your time.
